Uruguayan Footballer Dies : Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo tragically passed away five days after collapsing during a match in Brazil.
The 27-year-old Nacional club player suffered a heart attack in the 84th minute while competing for a spot in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores—South America’s most prestigious club tournament.
The incident occurred during a match against Sao Paolo, where Izquierdo suddenly collapsed. He was immediately rushed to Albert Einstein Hospital by ambulance.
Medical professionals diagnosed him with “cardiac arrest of undetermined onset, secondary to an arrhythmia.” Although placed on a ventilator and sedated, Izquierdo’s condition worsened due to “a progression of brain involvement and an increase in intracranial pressure,” as reported by the hospital.
Nacional club expressed their profound grief over the loss of their beloved player on social media platform X, sharing a heartfelt message alongside a black and white photograph of Izquierdo.
This tragedy is further compounded by the fact that Izquierdo’s wife, Selena, had just given birth to their second child a week earlier.
Uruguayan Footballer: Interestingly, it was revealed that Izquierdo had been diagnosed with “a small arrhythmia” a decade ago during routine youth team check-ups.
However, Nacional’s club president, Alejandro Balbi, stated that Izquierdo had never displayed any cardiac issues during his time with the club, which he joined in January of this year.
Born in Montevideo in 1991, Izquierdo started his football career in 2017, playing for several first-division Uruguayan clubs. He also had a stint with Atletico San Luis in Mexico.
