In a thrilling Euro 2024 encounter, Spain staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Georgia 4-1 and advance to the quarter-finals.
Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Nico Williams, and Dani Olmo all found the net after Robin Le Normand’s own goal initially put Georgia ahead in the 18th minute in Cologne.
Spain, who conceded their first goal of the tournament, equalized just before halftime through Rodri’s strike.
Fabian Ruiz then nodded in a header in the 51st minute, followed by Nico Williams’ clinical finish. Substitute Dani Olmo sealed the victory, setting up a tantalizing clash with hosts Germany in the next round.
“We faced challenges but showed our superiority overall,” remarked Rodri post-match. Spain, aiming for their fourth European title, are undeterred by the prospect of facing Germany on their home turf in Stuttgart.
Georgia, ranked 74th globally, exceeded expectations with their spirited play throughout the tournament, notably upsetting Portugal to reach the knockout stages.
Despite the loss, coach Willy Sagnol praised his team’s effort, highlighting their achievement in qualifying for their first major tournament.
