Top 5 Nigerian Athletes to Watch at the Paris Olympics 2024

The Paris Olympics 2024 are set to be a pivotal event for Nigerian athletes. With the games approaching, it’s time to spotlight Nigerian athletes who are expected to make waves on the global stage.

Nigeria’s Olympic journey began with a bronze medal by Nojeem Maiyegun in the men’s light middleweight boxing at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The country achieved its highest football success in 1996, winning gold at the Atlanta Olympics with the Dream Team. Chioma Ajunwa also made history in Atlanta by securing Nigeria’s first and only individual Olympic gold in the women’s long jump.

As the Paris Olympics 2024 commence on July 26, Nigeria will field athletes in 11 events, including football, basketball, long jump, and weightlifting. Here’s a look at the top Nigerian athletes to watch:

Tobi Amusan

Tobi Amusan is leading Nigeria’s sprint efforts with her world record in the 100m hurdles. Her remarkable form enhances Nigeria’s chances of adding to its Olympic gold count, which currently totals three since 1964.

Ese Brume

Ese Brume, born in the year Nigeria won its first Olympic gold, aims to mirror Chioma Ajunwa’s success in the long jump. At 28, she is the Commonwealth champion and a three-time African senior champion, holding both the Commonwealth Games and African long jump records.

Chukwuebuka Enekwech

Chukwuebuka Enekwech returns as an African champion in shot put. At 31, his experience and prowess make him a strong contender for a medal in Paris.

Favour Ashe

Favour Ashe, aged 22, recently clocked a personal best of 9.94 seconds in the men’s 100m at the NCAA East Prelims. This time is the fastest in the NCAA for 2024 and the second fastest globally this year. Ashe’s potential for a standout performance in Paris is high.

Asisat Oshoala

Asisat Oshoala, the current African Footballer of the Year, is a crucial player for the Super Falcons. Following a penalty-shootout loss to England at the World Cup, she and her team will aim to shine at the Olympics, starting with their match against Brazil on July 25.
