Olympics Outing: We Need To Reform Our Federations — Sports Minister

As Nigeria’s dismal performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics becomes a topic of concern, Minister of Sports Development John Enoh emphasizes the urgent need to overhaul the nation’s sports federations. This reform is crucial for effective sports development and improving Nigeria’s future Olympic performances.

Call for Comprehensive Reforms

John Enoh has stated that Nigerian sports federations must undergo significant reforms. The Minister, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, expressed regret over the poor showing in Paris and criticized the federation leadership for failing to achieve desired results. He highlighted the necessity for better systems and structures within the federations to ensure that Nigeria fields the best athletes and secures medals in future Olympic Games.

Minister’s Concerns and Apology

Enoh apologized to Nigerians for the lackluster performance and stressed that reform discussions should not be limited to the aftermath of a failed Olympics. He called for ongoing dialogue to address which federations may obstruct reform efforts and hinder progress.

State of Nigerian Sports

The Minister pointed out that when he took office in August 2023, the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) was effectively non-functional. Furthermore, most sporting federations lacked adequately equipped training centers. Enoh advocated for declaring a state of emergency in sports development to address these issues urgently.

Challenges with Federation Leadership

Enoh admitted that he faces limitations in directly changing the leadership of federations since they are elected by congresses. These leaders serve four-year terms that align with the Olympic cycle. Attempts to influence federations are often seen as interference, which complicates efforts to implement necessary changes.

Olympics Outcome and Disappointment

The Minister described Nigeria’s lack of medals at the Olympics as a “very sad” situation. Despite competing in 12 events, Nigeria failed to secure any medals. Enoh attributed this outcome to inadequate preparation and lack of motivation, despite significant financial investment. He revealed that over N8 billion was spent on the competition, highlighting the disparity between funds allocated for qualifying and actual preparation.

Future Steps and Accountability

Enoh expressed frustration over his limited powers to remove or discipline federation heads who fail to contribute effectively to sports development. He noted that many federation presidents have been in their positions for multiple Olympic cycles, continuously underperforming and jeopardizing Nigeria’s chances of success.

Conclusion: Time for Action

To avoid a repeat of this year’s disappointing performance, Enoh’s call for comprehensive reforms must be heeded. A thorough examination of federation leadership and structural changes are essential for Nigeria to achieve its sporting goals and excel in future Olympics.
