Gareth Southgate has stepped down as England manager after an eight-year tenure, following the defeat in the Euro 2024 final to Spain.
Lee Carsley, previously the England Under-21 manager, has been appointed as the interim England boss, the English Football Association (FA) announced on Friday.

Lee Carsley will transition from his role as England Under-21 manager to lead the senior team temporarily. This change comes after Gareth Southgate’s resignation post-Euro 2024.
Carsley, aged 50, will manage the England squad during the Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September. His tenure might extend based on how quickly the FA finds a permanent successor.
Carsley’s New Role and Future Prospects
The FA stated, “Carsley will oversee September’s fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, with the possibility of continuing in this role throughout autumn while the FA searches for a new permanent head coach.
” Carsley, with a notable playing career including 40 caps for the Republic of Ireland and over 300 Premier League appearances, led the England Under-21s to a Euro victory in 2023.
Despite his success with the youth teams, his experience with senior management is limited to brief caretaker roles at Brentford and Birmingham.
Carsley’s Goals and Challenges
In a statement, Carsley expressed, “It’s an honor to lead this England squad on an interim basis. My familiarity with the players and international football makes it logical for me to guide the team while the FA searches for a new manager. My main goal is to ensure continuity and achieve promotion in the UEFA Nations League.”
England will also compete against Greece in the Nations League’s second tier, having been relegated from the previous competition in 2022.
Notable names linked with the permanent position include former Chelsea boss Graham Potter and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.
