LeBron James will stay with the Los Angeles Lakers, signing a new two-year $104 million deal, according to multiple US reports on Wednesday.
James, who turns 40 in December, opted out of his previous contract last week, a move analysts believe will provide the Lakers with more financial flexibility to recruit new talent.
The NBA superstar’s re-signing was highly anticipated, especially after the Lakers drafted his eldest son, Bronny James, last week. LeBron has often expressed his desire to play in the NBA alongside his son.
ESPN and The Athletic reported that James’ new deal includes a no-trade clause, preventing any trade without his consent.
The four-time NBA champion and the league’s all-time leading scorer will embark on his 22nd season in 2024-2025.
James led the Lakers to an NBA championship in 2020 but has faced challenges in replicating that success. This year, the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
In a bid to revitalize the team’s fortunes, the Lakers appointed J.J. Redick, James’ podcast partner and television commentator, as head coach last month, following the dismissal of Darvin Ham.
