Kapil Dev, the legendary former captain of India’s World Cup-winning cricket team, has assumed the role of President at the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI).
This new responsibility marks a significant chapter in Kapil’s career, transitioning from his previous role as Vice President on the PGTI Board.
His appointment comes unanimously as he succeeds H R Srinivasan. Known for his prowess not only in cricket but also as an avid amateur golfer, Kapil Dev has long been associated with the PGTI and expressed great enthusiasm about his new position.
“I am deeply honored to take on the role of President at PGTI, an organization I’ve been proud to be a part of for many years,” Kapil remarked on his appointment. “Golf has been my passion for over three decades, and I look forward to furthering its reach and impact,” he added.
Kapil Dev has actively pursued new sponsorships for PGTI, notably introducing the Kapil Dev Grant Thornton Invitational at the prestigious DLF Golf and Country Club, featuring a substantial purse of Rs 2 crore (approx. USD 240,000).
Beyond his administrative duties, Kapil continues to participate in prominent golfing events globally, including the Dunhill Links, where he has competed alongside international celebrities.
Recognized as one of cricket’s greatest all-rounders, Kapil Dev’s illustrious career spans 131 Test matches and 225 one-day internationals. His leadership famously led India to victory in the 1983 World Cup, highlighted by his iconic innings of 175 not out.
In addition to scoring 5248 Test runs and taking 434 wickets, Kapil achieved significant milestones in ODIs, amassing 3783 runs and claiming 253 wickets.
With his new role at PGTI, Kapil Dev aims to elevate golf’s profile in India, leveraging his extensive sporting experience and network of top golfers like Jeev Milkha Singh, Arjun Atwal, and Shiv Kapur.
His leadership promises to usher in a new era for Indian golf, driven by his passion and vision for the sport’s future.
