Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar, and Israel Olympic Committee President Yael Arad Send Off Delegation in Jerusalem
The Israel Olympic delegation has departed for Paris, marking a significant step despite ongoing tensions. This move comes as the team of 88 athletes heads to the Olympics amid controversy related to the conflict in Gaza.
French Protests and Diplomatic Support
Before their departure, protests erupted with calls from activists and a French parliament member urging the Israeli team to refrain from attending. Despite these calls, French Foreign Minister Stéphane Sejourne assured that the Israeli athletes are “welcome in France.”
Team’s Resilience and Preparation
“Our first victory is that we are here and going (to the Olympics) and that we didn’t give up,” said Yael Arad, President of the Israel Olympic Committee. She spoke at Ben Gurion Airport, highlighting the team’s resilience since the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, which ignited the current conflict.
Enhanced Security in Paris
In response to the heightened global tensions, French organizers have increased security measures for the Israeli delegation. The athletes will face stringent security protocols throughout their stay in Paris.
