France Unbowed MP Faces Backlash Over Comments on Israeli Athletes

An MP from the radical-left France Unbowed party, Thomas Portes, has ignited controversy with his recent statements regarding Israeli athletes at the upcoming Paris Olympics. Portes, addressing a pro-Palestinian rally in Paris, declared that Israeli athletes are unwelcome at the Games, drawing significant backlash for his remarks.

Portes’ comments came amidst ongoing tensions related to Israel’s conflict with Gaza. He stated, “We are just days away from the Olympic Games in Paris. I’m here to make it clear that the Israeli delegation is not welcome. Israeli athletes should not be at the Paris Olympics.

We must use this moment to mobilize and act against their presence.” His statement was met with sharp criticism, particularly from Yonathan Arfi, the head of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France (CRIF). Arfi condemned Portes’ remarks as “indecent” and “irresponsible,” accusing him of “putting a target on the backs of Israeli athletes.”

Arfi highlighted the historical context, recalling the 1972 Munich Olympics where 11 Israeli athletes were murdered by Palestinian terrorists, emphasizing that Israeli Olympians are already at heightened risk.

In response to the controversy, Portes suggested that French diplomats should advocate for the exclusion of the Israeli flag and anthem at the Games, paralleling measures taken against Russia. He criticized what he views as “double standards.”

The backlash extended beyond Jewish organizations. Karen Taieb, a deputy mayor of Paris, labeled Portes as “a danger and a disgrace,” stressing that elected officials should foster unity rather than hatred.

French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin denounced Portes’ comments, noting the apparent antisemitism and assuring that Israeli athletes will receive round-the-clock security during the Games.

Socialist MP Jérôme Guedj expressed his support for Israeli athletes, stating, “Of course, Israeli athletes are welcome, like all athletes from around the world. Our welcome is based on their athletic abilities, not their national origins.”

As the Olympics approach, French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné assured the Israeli delegation of a warm welcome from France. He affirmed this stance during a meeting with EU counterparts in Brussels.

Additionally, Israeli President Isaac Herzog is set to attend Friday’s boat parade on the Seine and a commemoration for the Israeli victims of the 1972 Munich attack.

The ongoing debate underscores the complex interplay between politics and international sporting events, highlighting the challenges faced by athletes in the current geopolitical climate.
