The Afghanistan cricket team has made a significant impact on the world stage, recently securing their first-ever victory over Australia in the T20 World Cup 2024. This win has propelled them closer to the semi-finals and has garnered widespread praise from the cricket community.
However, some skepticism remains regarding Afghanistan’s performance against India, with claims suggesting their players are influenced by Indian Premier League (IPL) contracts. Veteran Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has firmly rebutted these allegations.
A Pakistani journalist took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his views, stating, “Afghanistan can beat any team in the world except India for obvious reasons. IPL contracts are very precious.”
Ashwin, visibly irked by the insinuation, directed his response to Elon Musk, the owner of X, emphasizing his right to control his social media experience. “I can’t tell u what to do @elonmusk but I should certainly have the right to decide who enters my house. My timeline my decision,” Ashwin wrote.
When advised to block such accounts, Ashwin retorted, “It shouldn’t be my duty to block a set of handles every day. I know who I want to follow.”
Afghanistan has already triumphed over New Zealand and Australia in this T20 World Cup. Their upcoming match against Bangladesh in the Super 8s is crucial for their semi-final aspirations. A victory against Bangladesh, coupled with specific outcomes in other matches, could secure their place in the last four.
Conversely, Bangladesh also relies on India to defeat Australia in their final match to ensure direct progression. Alternatively, Afghanistan could advance if they achieve a significant win over Bangladesh and Australia only narrowly beats India.
